What is the Feline Calicivirus &  calicivirus Infection :
FCV FHV1.png

Feline Herpesvirus:

Feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), commonly known as herpesvirus infection, is an infectious condition caused by feline herpesvirus type 1. (FHV-1). The virus, like other herpes viruses, is very species-specific, only infecting domestic and wild cats. Cats of various ages can be infected by the virus.

FVR is the leading cause of upper respiratory illness in cats and the leading cause of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the tissues surrounding the eye, especially the lining of the lids and the third eyelid).

What medical symptoms indicate a calicivirus infection?

Sneezing, nasal congestion, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the membranes lining the eyelids), and discharge from the nose or eyes are some of the common clinical indications of an upper respiratory infection that affect the nose and throat. The discharge may be clear or become yellow or green. Cats with a calicivirus infection frequently develop ulcers on their tongue, hard palate, gums, lips, or nose in addition to these normal symptoms. Due to the severe pain from the ulcers, these cats frequently drool or excessively salivate. Anorexia, lethargy, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and squinting are a few more non-specific symptoms of an upper respiratory infection.

An infected cat may experience abrupt, excruciating lameness in one or more joints as a result of certain calicivirus strains; kittens are more commonly affected by this lameness. One particular type of feline calicivirus, albeit uncommon, can result in a serious widespread illness. The infected cat first displays symptoms in the eyes, nose, and mouth, but rapidly shows signs of numerous organ illness, a high temperature, acute depression, edema of the legs and/or face, and jaundice. The fatality rate from this strain is said to be up to 67%, and it is extremely contagious.

How is a calicivirus infection diagnosed?

The typical clinical indications of a calicivirus infection are typically used to make a presumptive diagnosis, particularly when ulcers are present. Although a conclusive viral diagnosis is not often required, it may be suggested for cats used for breeding or if a particular cat has an illness that is not responding well to therapy.

Cells and discharge samples from the mouth, nose, and eyes can be taken in order to confirm the diagnosis. These samples should then be sent to a lab for specialist testing, such as viral isolation, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) identification, or immune-histochemical staining. A method known as a transtracheal wash may be used to collect samples for analysis if the infection has gone to the lungs. To rule out alternative reasons, such as an injury, X-rays may be advised if a cat exhibits sudden indications of lameness. Your veterinarian will advise additional diagnostic procedures such as blood tests, chest or skull X-rays, or culture and sensitivity testing of abnormal discharges if a cat has chronic respiratory problems.
