The spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme disease in dogs and several other animals. Ticks carry the disease, which has a global distribution. Lyme disease symptoms include fever, arthritis, and, less frequently, glomerulonephritis, uveitis, myocarditis, and neurologic indications. In an amplified lateral flow sandwich assay, peptides bind antibodies produced in response to specific Borrelia antigens in the Canine Lyme Disease Rapid Test Device. Colloidal gold particles coated with antigen bind to B.burgdorferi antibodies in the sample. The attached antibody runs through the strip and is subsequently trapped by the test strip's immobilised antigen. The aggregation of the trapped gold particle/antibody complex results in the appearance of a colour on the Test line.
