Canine Influenza Virus Antigen Rapid Test

The Canine Influenza Virus Antigen Rapid Test is a sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay for the qualitative detection of CIV antigens in canine ocular and nasal secretions.

Conditions and scope of use

At room temperature or in the refrigerator (2-30 °C), keep the product exactly as it came in the sealed pouch. Through the printed expiration date on the sealed packet, the test is stable. The sealed pouch is where the test device must stay until it is used. AVOID FREEZING. Use before the expiration date only.

How to use it?

Allow the test device, specimen, buffer, and/or controls to equilibrate to room temperature (15-30 °C) prior to testing. 

• 1.Collect canine’s ocular and nasal secretions with the swab stick. Make the swab wet sufficiently.

• 2.Insert the wet swab into the provided buffer tube. Agitate it to assure good sample extraction.

• 3. Place the test device on a clean and level surface. Hold the dropper vertically and transfer 4 drops of extracted sample (approximately 100 μl) to the specimen well (S) of the test device, then start the timer. See illustration below.

• 4. Read the result in 5-10 minutes. Do not interpret results after 15 minutes.

Interpretation of Results

Positive:	There are two lines. The control line zone (C) should always have one line, and the test line region (T) should always contain one apparent colored line.
Negative:	In the control region, just one colored line is Region (C). In the area of the test line, there is no discernible colored line.
Invalid:	Control line is not displayed. The most frequent causes of control line failure are insufficient specimen volume or improper procedural procedures. Review the steps and perform the test once again using a different test tool. Contact your local distributor right once and stop using the test kit if the issue continues.

Influenza virus was first identified as an infectious disease of dogs in 2004. The first isolation of the virus was done at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell in conjunction with a study being conducted by the University of Florida on respiratory disease in racing greyhounds. The virus was sequenced at the CDC and determined to be related to the H3N8 equine virus that was circulating in horses in the US. Specific genetic differences between the equine viruses and the viruses from canines defined the virus as a unique canine influenza virus (CIV).  

        As a result of the introduction of a CIV vaccine, the discovery of the virus in a number of new locations, and more testing to support the vaccine's introduction, there is currently a greater awareness of CIV. With a recent introduction into northern Virginia, CIV activity is still being seen in the Northeast region (from New York City to Philadelphia). With fresh reports from California and Las Vegas, Colorado too continues to experience regular CIV activity (California has had positive dogs in the past). In Florida, no virus has been found in the past year.

       The canine population continues to see a sluggish spread of CIV. Dogs kept in cramped spaces, such as boarding kennels, daycare centers, and animal shelters, are risk factors for infection. The main source of the virus spreading to new areas appears to be the relocation of animals from the rescue shelters.
