What You Need To Know To Prevent The Parvovirus In Dogs

Dogs may have been affected by a mysterious sickness in recent weeks, which veterinarians at Michigan State University's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) determined in late August to be canine parvovirus.

According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), the instances typically included dogs in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula who did not have a history of full vaccination, and there have been no cases documented in St. Joseph County. However, Michiganders from all around the state are concerned about parvovirus due to concerns and inquiries.

The fact that point-of-care tests at veterinary clinics and shelters regularly came back negative for the illness despite dogs displaying symptoms suggestive of it first added to the complexity and mystique surrounding these parvovirus cases.

Despite the finding of these incidents, dog owners shouldn't change how they look after their animals or where and how they travel. Although fully vaccinated dogs are protected against serious illness, it is still important to speak with a veterinarian.

We advise dog owners to follow these easy precautions to safeguard their pets:

  • 1. Ensure dogs and puppies receive routine vaccines from a veterinarian against canine parvovirus, rabies, canine distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, and leptospirosis.

  • 2. To keep dogs and puppies healthy and safe when dealing with other animals, make sure they have received all of their shots.

  • 3.If your dog or puppy shows any symptoms of disease, keep them inside and away from other dogs and call your veterinarian.

  • 4. When you take your pet for a walk in the open space, remember to pick up after them.

Then you must confirm that the parvovirus is not spreadable to humans or other domestic animal species. The state's veterinarian's office does not need to be notified because the sickness is widespread there.
