International multicenter research

The DZD researchers examined data from 13 national diabetes registers (Australia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia Czech Republic, USA [Colorado], and Wales). The study included 104,290 children and young people aged 6 months to 18 years old who were diagnosed with T1D between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2021. The observed prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis in 2020 and 2021 was compared to forecasts made prior to the epidemic (2006–2019).

During the pandemic, the prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis increased more than expected.

Between 2006 and 2019, diabetic ketoacidosis affected 23,775 of 87,228 children diagnosed with T1D (27.3%). Between 2006 and 2019, the overall cohort's mean yearly rise in the prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis was 1.6%. During the pandemic, the numbers were substantially higher than expected. The adjusted observed prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis in 2020 was 39.4% (predicted prevalence 32.5%) and 38.9% in 2021 (predicted prevalence 33.0%).

According to the study's authors, offering a detailed description of the characteristic signs of T1D in kids to the general public, individuals working in childcare or daycare settings, and primary care physicians could help raise T1D awareness. Furthermore, public health initiatives, such as instituting a general islet-cell autoantibody screening program for children, could be employed to limit the amount of harmful metabolic abnormalities.
