How blood oxygen levels are measured using a little instrument called a pulse oximeter

Oct 25, 2022Leave a message

What is measured by a pulse oximeter?

The level of blood oxygen saturation is measured by a pulse oximeter. In essence, this percentage is a calculation of the blood's oxygen content, with 100% being "completely saturated" blood and the ideal level.

Even though many pharmacies sell this basic, non-invasive medical device over the counter, most people don't need it.

Additionally, pulse oximeters have been utilised to identify severe COVID-19 instances. This is due to the fact that the coronavirus can lower blood oxygen levels, albeit if this happens, you'll probably notice other symptoms before needing to use a pulse oximeter.

The way a pulse oximeter functions

According to the World Health Organization, there are a few easy steps to follow in order to achieve the most precise result from a pulse oximeter:

Correctly position the probe. This will typically be on a finger, toe, or earlobe depending on the device. Make sure it fits comfortably and isn't being yanked on; for instance, test it on your second toe rather than your big toe. Extra light may enter if the probe is too slack or tight, which will affect the reading.

Ensure that you are seated still. The reading will be impacted by shaking or shivering and may appear much lower than it is.

Any nail polish, remove it. The reading may be impacted by the colour of your nail polish. Choose a different finger, toe, or earlobe if the reading is being impacted by finger tattoos or henna dye. False alarms may sometimes result from cold fingers or toes.

Using a pulse oximeter correctly

The WHO states that a pulse oximeter measurement between 95% and 100% is deemed healthy and is not cause for alarm.

Your levels should typically be at 95 or greater if you don't have any underlying medical issues. However, it's crucial to discuss the right reading for you and when to seek medical attention with your doctor if you have a chronic condition.

As a point of reference, decreased blood oxygen saturation values could mean:

restricted airways

Having trouble breathing

infected lungs

impeded blood flow

Anesthesia, muscle relaxants, or anaphylaxis may cause drug interactions.

Rizzo also advises that you should consult your doctor if your pulse oximeter reading decreases while you are exercising because this could be a symptom of a lung or cardiac disease that is underlying.
