The survey results underline the importance of people being more conscious of their blood pressure and improving doctor-patient communication.
Because hypertension affects people of all ages and has the potential to be fatal if left uncontrolled, it is a relatively simple health indicator to monitor that might possibly save lives.
Dr. Anjali Dutta, a cardiologist at Morristown Medical Center at Atlantic Health System in Morristown, NJ, who was not involved in the study, spoke with Medical News Today about it. "This is an excellent study that allows people to participate in their own health," Dr. Dutta added.
Dr. Dutta stated that "many patients may not be able to check their blood pressure owing to hectic work schedules or may have limited finances and cannot purchase a blood pressure monitor" when asked why she believes less than half of the participants self-monitor their blood pressure.
Dr. Vicken Zeitjian, a cardiologist who was not involved in the study, spoke with MNT about the survey results and hypothesized on why people may fail to monitor their blood pressure.
"High blood pressure is generally asymptomatic unless exceedingly high (dubbed the "silent killer"), therefore many patients do not feel the need to check because they do not feel any different," Dr. Zeitjian explained.
Dr. Zeitjian also mentioned that doctors do not always recommend people check their blood pressure on a regular basis if it is within a healthy range in the clinic.
"The concept of hypertension has been set aside," Dr. Zeitjian added. "However, blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day due to activity, food, and stress levels." It's better to have an understanding of your average blood pressure throughout the day than to rely on spot tests at the doctor's office."
Dr. Zeitjian also mentioned the growth in heart disease among young individuals, emphasizing the significance of self-monitoring blood pressure at all stages of maturity.
