DHAKA, 16th of July (Xinhua) -- The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reports that more than 11,000 dengue patients were hospitalized in Bangladesh during the first half of July.

The number of cases in the South Asian nation reached its highest peak on Saturday, when 1,623 new infections and seven further deaths were confirmed, according to the DGHS.

With 100 fatalities and 19,454 cases overall, this single-day total is the highest since January of this year.

There were 11,476 new dengue cases reported as of 8:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, and the death toll had risen to 54, showing a sharp increase in the mosquito-borne illness in Bangladesh.

The virus that causes dengue fever is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. The condition typically results in an acute illness with symptoms like headache, fever, tiredness, excruciating muscular and joint pain, swollen glands, vomiting, and rash.
