When is an ECG used?
An ECG is frequently used in conjunction with other tests to help diagnose and monitor heart conditions.
It can be used to look into symptoms of a heart problem, such as chest pain, palpitations (rapid heartbeats), dizziness, and shortness of breath.
A series of ECGs can also be taken over time to monitor a person who has already been diagnosed with a heart condition or is taking medication that may have an effect on the heart.
How an ECG is performed
There are several methods for performing an ECG. The test generally entails attaching a number of small, sticky sensors known as electrodes to your arms, legs, and chest. Wires connect these to an ECG recording machine.
There is no need for you to do anything special to prepare for the exam. You can eat and drink normally before the procedure.
You will usually need to remove your upper clothing before the electrodes are attached, and your chest may need to be shaved or cleaned. Once the electrodes are in place, you may be given a hospital gown to wear.
The test itself usually only takes a few minutes, and you should be able to go home or return to the ward if you're already there.
Obtaining your results
Your heart rhythm and electrical activity will typically be displayed as a graph on an ECG recording machine, either electronically or on paper.
In the case of an ambulatory ECG, the ECG machine will electronically store information about your heart, which a doctor can access once the test is completed.
You may not be able to obtain the results of your ECG right away. A specialist doctor may need to review the recordings to see if there are any indications of a problem. Other tests may be required before determining whether or not there is a problem.
